January’s Book: Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh
by Jamie Klingler
We’re kicking the year off in classic style next year, beginning with Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh. Points will be deducted from anyone who watches the tv series instead of reading the book, but hey – you have the Christmas holidays: why not do both?
The most nostalgic and reflective of Evelyn Waugh’s novels, Brideshead Revisited looks back to the golden age before the Second World War. It tells the story of Charles Ryder’s infatuation with the Marchmains and the rapidly-disappearing world of privilege they inhabit. Enchanted first by Sebastian at Oxford, then by his doomed Catholic family, in particular his remote sister, Julia, Charles comes finally to recognize only his spiritual and social distance from them.
We’ll be meeting on Tuesday 28th January 2014, at 7pm, upstairs at The Rugby Tavern, 19 Great James St, WC1N 3ES (nearest tube is Holborn).
