First Book- Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
by Jamie Klingler
Blonde and I decided to pick the first book and then as this progresses we can mix it up with lists/discussions or just rotate who chooses the next book. Two girls at work are reading it and it brought back memories of high school and being introduced to Margaret Atwood. I’m reading it for the second time, but it’s new to Blonde and there’s lots to discuss. I recall it as a female 1984. The description from Amazon is :
The Republic of Gilead offers Offred only one function: to breed. If she deviates, she will, like dissenters, be hanged at the wall or sent out to die slowly of radiation sickness. But even a repressive state cannot obliterate desire – neither Offred’s nor that of the two men on which her future hangs.
Brilliantly conceived and executed, this powerful evocation of twenty-first century America gives full rein to Margaret Atwood’s devastating irony, wit and astute perception.
We’re aiming for February 27th. Central London location… keep in touch and give us an idea of numbers.
Look forward to meeting everyone. @photogirluk
